Motivation
Across history, the role of churches evolved according to the societal organization of the time. Trade, state power, symbolic universes or even spirituality are all topics in which churches are highly involved. The aim of the project is thus to further deepen the role of Churches by 3D modelling from 2D maps and replacing them on the 1808 Venice cadaster. With such an augmentation, we could expect to be able to extract information about the distribution of Churches in Venice but also their architectural property. Among other things, this is a property that could be linked with specific historic events and patterns.
Project Plan
Main steps of the project:
- Digitize the book Catalogo Veneziano - Churches
- Associate the 2D schematic, the name of the church and other information of the book together in a database.
- Map the location of the church on the cadaster. e.g. use Open Street Map to locate the churches on the map.
- Perform line detection analysis on the churches top view schematic.
- Come up with a general rule to extract a 3D shape out of the schematic.
- Locate churches schematics on the 1808 cadaster.
- Use procedural visual programming to generate a 3D model.
- Tada!
Note: some steps may be done manually. There are approximately 300 churches in Veneziano Catalogo.

Methodology
The wells of Venice feature detailed artworks such as stone sculptures. It is challenging to replicate them with a procedural 3D modelling process. The goal is to identify the most basic typologies of wells with basic geometric shapes and use them to model a simple shape of each well with Rhino Grasshopper.
