Inspired by the instagram page Humans of New York, we image a 1900 Paris version based on the vast collection of photographs by Atelier Nadar. Humans of New York provides us with an insight on who lives in New York today and what their lives are like. The idea behind this project is to bring this experience to Paris in the late 19th century, giving the faces in the photograph of Atelier Nadar a story. With this we also aim not only to make the 23 thousand large collection more accessible and more easy to navigate but add an additional layer of information so laypeople can identify with the parisians of that time.

Description

Adapting many ui elements from instagram, we add metadata (in the from of hashtags) to increase the ease of navigating the collection. Computer vision would allow us much richer information from the images, such as the gender and age. For each person, we gather portraits of individuals and match them to their life story. We get this story from Wikipedia. We collect images of the same person and give them their own "paristagram" page. To go a step further to ease navigation, we cluster images and provide users to look at similar looking people, and at people who look similar to themselves (by uploading their own picture). Having a past lookalike will surely connect people to Paris a 120 years ago.
