Introduction

Gazetteer is a geographical dictionary or directory containing information about geographical regions. The information can include social statistics, number of habitants, physical features of a country, information about the habitants etc.

Crowd-sourcing

There exists crowd-sourced gazetteer where the information also comes from users directly.

GeoNames which contains over 10 million geographical names and allows user to manually edit, correct and add new names [1].

Nominatim from the OpenStreetMap project is also a crowd-sourced gazetteer which labels itself as "community driven" [2].
