Biography

Jimmy Wales is an American Internet entrepreneur, and he is the co-founder of Wikipedia and Wikia. He was born in Huntsville, Alabama,on August 7, 1966.

Wikipedia and Wikitribune

On January 15, 2001, with Larry Sanger and others, Wales launched Wikipedia — a free, open content encyclopedia. By creating Wikipedia, he says that his goal was to create a world in which “every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge”.[1]

He's now launching an online publication, which purpose is to combat fake news. This project is called Wikitribune, and the new stories will be produce by professional journalists and a community of interested readers. The site will be financed by a crowdfunding campaign. For Wales, Wikitribune ”is news by the people and for the people”. Ten professional journalists will be hired, and they will work close by the members of the community, members who will help fact-check and copyedit articles. [2]
